Passive acoustic sensing: a site evaluation checklist

Define what you need to observe before comparing a sensor specification. This guide organizes a civilian site evaluation and the evidence to request.

Facilities teams, technical evaluators and procurement managers · Updated: 2026-09-18

Who is this for?

A facility team is considering a new observation capability or reviewing an existing one. Agree which event matters, who will review an alert and what action follows. A demonstration in another setting is a starting point for questions, not acceptance at your site.

What are the options?

OptionWhen to consider itQuestion to resolve
Keep the existing processDocument the baseline before a changeWhat is currently missed or manually reviewed?
Evaluate a passive approachThe requirement is based on observing existing signalsWhat site conditions and signal sources must be represented?
Compare a complementary methodOne method may leave unanswered requirementsWhich gap must another method close, and who owns integration?

How should you evaluate them?

  • Write the event definition and the exclusions in plain language.
  • Specify the operating hours, background conditions, placement constraints and data access.
  • Agree how missed events, nuisance alerts, availability and operator workload will be recorded.
  • Define a bounded evaluation with a pass/fail decision owned by the buyer.

What evidence should you request?

  • Product and software version; setup and installation conditions.
  • Test method, event log, reference observations and excluded conditions.
  • Data access, retention settings and the responsible site contact.
  • Written acceptance criteria and any unresolved limitations.

Where can we help?

Use the inquiry to discuss scope, missing information and a possible evaluation. Supplier capability, pricing, delivery and the contracting entity must be confirmed for the project. Website development does not make the developer the supplier.
