Sundt’s 2021 example compares two people for four hours with one inspector for thirty minutes for a selected inspection. Do not apply that task’s labor comparison to the total construction project.

01 / Start with the work

Record survey setup, access, acquisition, processing, missing-view checks and rework. A short flight is not the same as a finished, accepted model.

03 / What the buyer receives

Deliver the model, source imagery, coordinate definition, checkpoint residuals and a change register. Visual similarity alone is not dimensional acceptance.

04 / Acceptance and measurement

Proposed acceptance: checkpoint accuracy, coverage, reconstruction completeness, reflight rate and total labor-hours to an approved deliverable. Set tolerances for the actual BIM or survey use.

05 / Limits and failure modes

Reflective surfaces, hidden geometry, motion blur and inconsistent coordinates can invalidate a model. Reconstructed surfaces are not automatically manufacturing drawings or NC toolpaths.

06 / Decision and responsibility

Candidate roles: survey or VDC lead specifies quality; project manager approves the deliverable; procurement engages the survey/integration provider.

07 / Prepare a scoped request

Potential RFQ: stable camera mounts, timing integration or missing-view review tools. Provide sample imagery, design model, coordinate system and accepted output format.
