History

Established in 1988 as Pro Ocean Yacht and later renamed Karmin International Co., Ltd., the company designs and builds custom small and medium-sized sportfishing craft. Its successive models established a foundation of design expertise, customer satisfaction and recognition among professional boaters.

Transition

In February 2003, Karmin established a new facility in Kaohsiung for research, development and the manufacture of special-purpose craft. The facility brought together advanced design software, composite materials technology and production equipment to support complete boatbuilding projects.
Karmin subsequently developed its rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) range, including a US-patented collar design, and delivered customized craft for government agencies conducting maritime interdiction and other demanding operations.

K9 RIB prototype

In 2002, the fishing vessel Yuanshen No. 2, carrying 134 fishermen in waters off southern Taiwan, lost power after a cabin fire as a typhoon approached. Winds reached force 8 and waves exceeded 6 m. The Taiwan Air Force and Coast Guard responded, but helicopters could lift only 1–2 people at a time, and the sea conditions prevented the Coast Guard from deploying its lifeboats alongside the vessel. Two civilian rescue teams arrived in 6 m RHIBs and shuttled between Yuanshen No. 2 and the Coast Guard ship. A total of 133 people were rescued.
The rescue highlighted the ability of RHIBs to operate in severe sea conditions. In 2003, the Taiwan government invited domestic and overseas manufacturers to tender for a customized rescue RHIB suited to Taiwan’s coastal waters. Karmin won the tender with its K90 proposal, based on its seakeeping performance and patented triple-layered collar. The company’s historical account records patents in Singapore, China, the United States and other jurisdictions.
The K90 Rescue RHIB marked a milestone in the development of Karmin’s range. At the time of the original company account, it had remained in service for more than a decade and had undertaken rescue missions in severe sea conditions.
