Triple-layered hybrid collar
Reported firing trial of Karmin’s triple-layered hybrid collar
Karmin’s triple-layered hybrid collar combines a wear-resistant outer layer of Hypalon/neoprene-coated fabric, an EVA foam cushioning layer described by the manufacturer as water-resistant and nonflammable, and replaceable inflatable chambers made from Hypalon/neoprene-coated fabric. The chambers are divided into separate sections.
The three layers are intended to provide impact resistance and meet different operational requirements. In the manufacturer’s reported M16 firing trial, the collar retained its form and water resistance after penetration. Karmin states that an inner air chamber can be replaced within 2 minutes, allowing the boat to continue its mission without returning to the yard.
The collar was assembled to specification and placed on a small-arms range. An M16 rifle was fired from approximately 30 m. Six shots were directed at the center of the collar so that the projectiles would pass through all layers.
Observed effects on the collar
All six shots penetrated the collar’s layers. The outer Hypalon layer showed six entry holes approximately 5 mm wide and six exit holes on the opposite side. The reported observations indicate that the EVA foam closed around the penetration paths and that a substantial amount of air remained inside the inflatable tube.
Karmin’s account presents the test as evidence of the collar’s ability to retain its function after projectile penetration.
According to the test account, full penetration caused little or no observed effect on the collar’s performance in those test conditions.
The inner inflatable tube can be replaced while the boat remains at sea, according to the manufacturer’s description.Observations and Findings
The test account records the following observations:
The collar retained its shape. The EVA foam wall prevented it from collapsing after multiple shots had passed through all layers.
The holes in the EVA foam closed after penetration, helping retain much of the air in the inner inflatable tube.
Conclusion
Karmin concludes that the collar retained its function after projectile penetration in the reported test. The account describes little or no observed effect on performance under those test conditions.
The manufacturer states that the damaged inner inflatable tube can be replaced while the boat remains at sea.
