US drone applications
US drone applications. See how drones support eight real US workflows. Compare the buyer’s task, documented evidence, integration requirements and a proposed acceptance plan before requesting a technical review.

Applications
Confined-space equipment inspection
Can an inspector assess an internal defect without building access scaffolding?
Solar and substation inspection
Can recurring asset observations reach the maintenance team without a new site visit each time?
Construction reality capture
Does the built condition match the design and support an auditable handover?
Rail and bridge inspection
Which asset needs closer inspection, and where exactly is the finding?
Medical campus delivery
Can a time-sensitive item arrive with an intact chain of custody?
Small-item retail delivery
Can a small urgent order be fulfilled reliably at an acceptable total cost?
Emergency-call scene assessment
Can a dispatcher obtain useful scene information before ground responders arrive?
Post-disaster infrastructure assessment
Which damaged sites should engineers inspect and repair first?
Technology
RTK, checkpoints and the delivered map
A fixed GNSS solution describes positioning, not the accuracy of every point in a map. A mapping workflow also needs the coordinate reference, antenna-to-camera offsets, exposure timing, camera calibration and independently surveyed checkpoints. Separate horizontal and vertical errors.
Navigation without reliable GNSS
Indoor inspection needs local position and recoverable evidence when satellite positioning is unavailable. Visual or LiDAR-based localization can help, but darkness, dust, repetitive surfaces and movement can degrade it. Local coordinates must be tied to an equipment reference before a defect can be revisited.
Dock, communications and human control
A dock is one part of an operating system. Site power, connectivity, weather limits, launch checks, a responsible operator and a recovery process must work together. Keep flight-critical control onboard; explicitly assign remote supervision, data transfer and cloud processing. Automatic launch does not establish permission for a particular operation.
Payload and mission-computer integration
Start with the measurement or delivery task. Define mass, center of gravity, stiffness, vibration, power, cooling, connectors and data interfaces before a mount is machined. A mechanical fit alone does not prove electrical, software or airworthiness compatibility. Use a supplier ICD where available and freeze its revision.
From sensor data to a reviewed decision
Capture → validate → upload → review → act. Preserve timestamps, asset IDs, original files and processing versions. Edge software checks completeness locally; cloud processing may build models and distribute review tasks. A maintenance owner accepts an observation and records the resulting work order. Counting flights alone misses the outcome.
Configuration-level supply-chain qualification
“Non-red” is a buyer requirement that needs a precise definition. Company headquarters, NDAA statements and a Blue UAS entry answer different questions. Confirm the purchased SKU, radio, payload, software, cloud access and component provenance against the buyer’s actual requirements. Freefly’s radio-dependent configurations show why a company-wide label fails.
From a requirement to a scoped project
Value comes from an accepted decision or delivery. Compare equal tasks and include preparation, travel, capture, processing, review, rework and handoff. Start with a bounded paid trial and an agreed acceptance record before expanding hardware or fleet investment.
Local and cloud responsibilities
Onboard: flight-critical control and capture. Local station: mission checks, cached data and upload validation. Cloud, where selected: processing, access control and review distribution. The operator and buyer agree ownership, retention, offline behavior and recovery; this site does not connect to a live aircraft.
Start with the documented architecture
This is a be-passive research and project-intake resource. Named organizations are source examples, not claimed customers or partners. Flight operations, manufacturing and integration services require a separate capability and responsibility review.
Equipment examples
Flyability · Elios 3
Actual case example: Dominion’s condenser inspection used Elios 3 according to Flyability. The relevant need is internal visual access and traceable observations, rather than outdoor RTK mapping. The reviewed record does not establish a “non-red” procurement qualification.
Skydio · X10 candidate
Skydio states that X10 is NDAA compliant and offers an attachment interface control document. Treat it as a configuration to assess, not proof that every case here used X10: Sundt’s 2021 record names Skydio 2. Brand-level and model-level evidence must remain separate.
Freefly · Astro configuration
A candidate for modular integration, not an aircraft attributed to the BNSF or NCDOT cases. Freefly distinguishes NDAA/Blue configurations with Doodle Labs radio from other configurations using Herelink. Its technical material names Auterion Enterprise PX4; this does not establish compatibility with an arbitrary module.
Matternet, Wing and Zipline · delivery systems
FAA documents the historical UPS Flight Forward/Matternet WakeMed operation in 2019. Walmart names Wing and Zipline in its 2026 delivery announcement. These are separate operations with their own aircraft, release mechanisms and operating responsibilities; a shared “delivery” label does not imply interchangeable components.
